Journalism Experience

Interactive Media Specialist with Baptist News Global

I am passionate about interactive journalism. In my position with Baptist News Global (BNG), I stay on top of trends and new research in multimedia storytelling, social media marketing and audience development for a non-profit news organization. BNG receives over 2.5 million sessions a year on our interactive website and also provides a daily e-newsletter and a bi-monthly magazine. I apply the best techniques to connect with our busy and distracted audience through our website and social media networking sites using a limited financial budget. Furthermore, I provide interpretation of analytics from all of our platforms to help the editorial staff best understand their connection with our audience. I grow the audience to our website, social media sites and e-newsletter subscriptions. I also provide strategy improvement to our development team as we seek to sustain our reader-supported funding model. I am constantly thinking about new media strategies, audience engagement and brand awareness as I provide support to a news organization striving for relevance in a noisy environment.

In addition to my years of interactive communication experience, I received my Master of Science in Interactive Media from Quinnipiac University, one of only a handful of ground-breaking universities offering this degree. I was able to focus on progressive journalism trends through courses like “Writing for Interactive Media”, “Social Media Concepts and Practices” and “Interactive Communication Theory.” My studies at Quinnipiac University piqued my interest in diving deeper into theories behind how and why we use different communication in this digital era. This has provided the right opportunity to explore what this means for journalists and news organizations through study of the latest insights into this ever-changing field.

Besides my work with BNG, I also meet with teams of staff and leaders as a communications consultant and discern what is and is not working as they seek to communicate with their constituents in all forms of media including digital, print, on-site and social networks. I mentor and coach them to improve their strategy using the latest research. Besides this consulting work, I am a frequent presenter at conferences and workshops to share my knowledge about communication needs and trends. I have a clear understanding of successful communication and audience connection and know how to guide and instruct others.
